Animatronic artist Xiao Di has conceived a series of giant animals, imaginatively developed to express forms and movement taken from nature and applied through robotics to realize these creatures taken from ancient Chinese legends. These animals represent something deep within the Chinese psyche, and bringing them to life in this way has brought them vividly into the present for an enthusiastic contemporary audience.
Launched last year in Dalian WISDOM PARK Bear Cave Street (a major shopping district of Dalian), the Giant Bear (nickname Bei Bei) was seen by 600,000 people in just four months. Standing 7 metres tall and weighing 25 tons, this installation is the first animatronic creature on rails expressly made for an interior street environment.
The Giant Bear combines high-tech special effects, digital programming and a design which integrates a number of bespoke structural mechanisms. The design process required over 1,880 drawings and sketches, and a year to develop the design to its final completion. The entire creature is pulled by a hidden winch and carried along a track, which extends for a full city block. Lively, complex movements such as blinking its eyes, rolling its tongue, and raising its eyebrows create a range of surprising emotions and expressions - taken together with larger physical actions such as standing up, or shaking its head from side to side, creates rich, memorable effects and strong audience interaction.
When talking about the creation of the Mythical Beasts series with Dezeen, Xiao Di explained: "My aim was to harness the creative potential of animatronics by applying it to the rich Chinese history of myths and legends. By using the most up to date technology to build something inspired by ancient tales, we have created spectacular, larger than life animatronic animals, derived from the powerful symbolic images at the core of Chinese culture.”
