Hua Xu Boutique Hotel by interior designer Zhang Haihua, a project which integrates traditional southern Chinese Jiangnan architectural principles into a stylishly contemporary aesthetic. Located in the ancient city district of Suzhou, famed for its picturesque canals, Zhang has created a project which smoothly transitions between its clean, minimal interior spaces and the garden courtyards, which act as a kind recreation of the surrounding landscape in miniature.

The public spaces of the hotel have been arranged to provide a series of framed views through to the external areas, through the use of deep eaves, floor to ceiling glazing, and the subtle grading of floor tiles, stone paving, and garden moss. Zhang has also taken inspiration from the tall, dramatic scale of Suzhou’s narrow alleyways, reinterpreting their visual impact with gently angled surfaces leading upwards to frame extended skylights above.

Through referencing the tactile materiality of Suzhou’s existing buildings and their close connection to nature, Zhang has designed a building which captures the spirit of traditional Chinese culture, and infused it into a new sense of place within the ancient city.
